A Life Once Lost Interview

Early this morning (a Tuesday- after being up late for the show..) I gave Bob Meadows (vocalist) from A Life Once Lost a call- lucky for him, it was a comfortable time in the afternoon in the states.

The bands new upcoming album "Ecstatic Trance" is out on the 22nd October (in the states) & internationally on the 16th of November on Seasons of Mist records, and after hearing him talk about it I really wanna check it out!

It is important that you follow the links below, as googling for 'a life once lost' doesn't always get you there...

Bits of my Steel Panther interview finds its was to a paper

My interview with Satchel of the infamous Steel Panther, ahead of their October 2nd Auckland (New Zealand) show at the Powerstation, seems to be rather popular.

Not only has the bands official facebook page linked the URL from this site for it, (The transcript that is: http://www.hardfastheavy.com/2012/09/transcript-of-steel-panther-interview.html) but NZ's Truth paper has used bits from it in a piece on the band.

The highlighted bits are from my transcript, from this very site.
I still have the original audio. Yes, they did have my permission to use the
interview that I had put on the internet for anyone to see. No, I didn't get paid for it,
but then again I've never gotten paid for anything radio related so
what difference does it make.

Steel Panther links us on their FB

The other day I finally got round to posting the transcript of my interview with Steel Panther guitarist, Satchel. Pretty quickly the Steel Panther facebook page posted a link to it (in the pic below it's the one with Satchel) The traffic to http://www.hardfastheavy.com/2012/09/transcript-of-steel-panther-interview.html exploded over night, turning it into our site's second most viewed post.

Here's the link to the post: https://www.facebook.com/steelpantherkicksass/posts/153689478103648

The band are in NZ on October 2nd, here's the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/253290494790457/

Needless to say, I'm pretty chuffed.

metalsucks thinks LoD sucks

http://www.metalsucks.net/2012/09/07/legacy-of-disorders-last-man-standing-makes-me-the-first-man-sleeping/
Legacy of Disorder, originating from Nelson, New Zealand now seemingly based on the road as they support tour after tour of some pretty darn big names, only manage to score a 1/5 from American metal blog, Metalsucks.net, the same site that virtually professed their undying love for Auckland based Ulcerate (not actually professed anything really, rather enjoyed their work). The review itself was a mash of colourful word play mixed with a few references suggesting the author did listen to the album, & perhaps highlighting the struggle unfamiliar bands have in getting word out, especially in foreign markets like the States.
However, despite of one critics view on their new album, the band are still touring and still gaining fans from those lucky enough to witness them live, and I doubt a 1/5 would be rockin it all over another country.

Legacy of Disorder's new album "Last Man Standing" is out on September 18th, hopefully everywhere.

Transcript of Steel Panther interview. Warning: contains naughty words

Transcript of interview with Satchel, Steel Panther.

Dale: How’s it going?
Satchel: Oh man, it’s going awesome- I’m kicking so much ass right now.

D:[laughs] Sweet, so you’re kicking ass, how’s the band doing?
S: Well the band’s not doing so good, uh, Michael, he’s about 35 pounds over weight right now so we’re gonna try to get him down to fighting weight before we come down to New Zealand
D: Fair enough
S: [continues] and uh, but he’s eating a lot. He eats pizza every day so it’s not easy to do.

D: Sweet, I understand it looks like you have a residency at the house of blues in both LA and vegas for the next, well till you come to NZ basically, what’s up with that? You party in Vegas and head home to LA, is that what’s going on?
S: We’ve been doing that for quite some time, you know, years and years of, you know, basically residencies at House of Blues in LA and Vegas and been attracting audiences from, you know, dozens of miles away for, to see those shows and uh, we’ve pretty much established ourselves as one of the top fifty heavy metal bands in the Vegas-LA area and I think by doing that we’ve secured our place in rock n roll history and also pretty much secured a lot of really hot pussy for ourselves, you know, over the years.
D: sweet
S: can I say pussy?
D: you can whatever the hell, cunt, pussy, fuck, shit you want
S: oh fuck yeah dude, that’s fucking bitchin

D: I noticed when American stars go to, lets say Britain, they do get shocked that you say swear words on tv, even things like farting and pooping and shit like that- is that what you guys play on? You sort of just, essentially got your balls out for the American public and they’re all shocked?
S: Are they shocked? The American public?
D: Yeah
S: You know, I don’t know… we.. I think people are.. I think we’re a breath of fresh air in America, you know ‘cos we’re just totally brutally honest about everything which, where most people in America are full of shit, I don’t know if you noticed that, like we, I wouldn’t lie about anything. I can tell you right now that my penis, when it’s totally hard, is nine inches long and I don’t bullshit about that kind of thing, you know what I’m saying. So people, you know, when you’re honest with them, I think people like that and I tell girls when I about to have sex with them that I have Genital warts and I haven’t done anything about it, but it’s ribbed for their pleasure and I think girls like that kind of thing, you know, they know they’re going to catch diseases with me and, you know, they’re okay with that. I think girls would rather you be honest with them than be full of shit and as long as you’re, as long as they think you’re being honest you can pretty much lie as much as you want. You hear what I’m saying? [laughs]

D: so good advice to follow [laughs] I’m gonna jump straight in and ask some basic questions about your NZ show, are you guys looking forward to coming down here?
S: Oh my god, we’ve never been to NZ it’s gonna be fucking awesome. I can’t wait. I’ve heard a lot about New Zealand and how beautiful it is. I heard the girls there are really, really easy to fuck which is awesome. And, especially, we’ve got, like, at least seven to twelve hard core Steel Panther there and I think that by the time we play it’s gonna be a sold out show and uh, we’re gonna get, it’s gonna be awesome it’ll probably be the best show that we’ve ever done and may even be the last show we ever do. So don’t forget to by your ticket, come if you’re watching, listening or reading.

D: Well as a side note, the venue you’re playing at, about ten years ago fear factory who are also playing pretty close to when you are, last time they played at that venue they did that whole brake up thing back in 2001,so could happen…
S: Broke up?
D: I don’t know being in the glam metal scene if you know too much about fear factory but in 2001/2002 they sorta had a bit of a band issue
S: they broke up after NZ?
D: They played here in December, that January they were broke up.
S: Oh you know what, you guys don’t have to worry about that because we’ll never break up because there’s uh, right now we’re making more money than we’ve ever made. We all make one to two hundred dollars a week now which is more than we’ve ever made and Michael still works at Starbucks by his house three days a week when we’re not on the road so you know there’s too much money involved for us to quite this band at this point, even though we can’t stand each other, we’re just, you know, we’re all in it for the money, we’re basically musical whores and that’s what we’re gonna do- keep on rocking, uh, for the money sake. We could play New Zealand a hundred times and we’ll never break up, you know we’re like Elton John gonna keep on whoring ourselves out… for the money.

D: sweet, now for the uninitiated what can fans expect from a Steel Panther show, I ask because not only are you balls out heavy metal but you’re also fucking funnyas well.
S: Right on, what can they expect from a Steel Panther show?
D: yeah.
S:  Well, I tell you what, they can expect, I’m not trying to be, I know this might sound like I’m full of myself man you know and all that but they can expect the best motherfucking  heavy metal show they’ve ever fucking seen in their goddamn lives and I’m not bullshitting. And I do have a nine inch dick. That’s fucking straight up true. Let me tell you something, when people come and they see our show they’re gonna be like dude I heard satchel say it’s gonna be the best show I’ve ever seen and you know what, that guy must have a nine inch dick because that was the best fucking show I’ve ever seen in my life, and if he’s not bullshitting about the show then I wanna suck his dick, I mean girls will say that, some guys will probably say it too, ‘cos some guys really like to suck nine inch dicks
D: there you go.
S: how’s that?

D: there’s almost a band named after nine inch somethings
S: [laughs] what’s that?
D: there’s almost a band named after nine inch something’s, they were nails, but still.
S: I know right? Nine inch dicks, that’s actually the original name for Trent Reznor’s band but I already had a copy right on that so I wouldn’t let him use it.

D: sweet, now NZ’s only a small place, you’ve probably got a few other people wanting to talk to you from NZ, you mentioned nine inches to me, are you talking, ten inches to someone else, eight and half to someone else so when you’re sitting out there and you hear ten inches you know, or is just flat stick with the truth, I guess with nine inches..
S: Yeah, well honestly my dick can get to ten inches if I’m really super aroused. It also depends on where I’m measuring it from, if I put the ruler at the base of my butthole that’s like an extra inch, you know what I mean, I can totally do that. Do you guys use inches down there, or do you use centimetres?

D: We use centimetres for everything except for penis length.
S: oh penis length, good then girls know what nine or ten inches is, then.
D: yeah
S: I wouldn’t have to say, what would the equivalent in centimetres, like probably a hundred centimetres, right…
D: [laughs]
S: my dick is a hundred centimetres long
D: yeah, yeah um,
S: Fire hose

D: fire hose.. um now a basic question. I’m kinda regretting asking stupid questions [i.e. given the humorous responses]
S: there are no stupid questions only stupid answers alright.

D: there you go, do you guys like playing in front of the big festival crowds where there’s more people to be the centre of attention in front of, or the smaller club shows where you can mess with the crowd and I guess get groupies.
S: You know what I like ‘em both, it’s hard to, I don’t really, I personally don’t care whether we play, I mean I like playing in front of a lot of people, I also like playing in front of small audiences. As long as the people are enjoying themselves, because that’s the main thing. You know, when you’re in front of a big audience you still have a tendency to focus on the first ten or twelve rows of people anyway, ‘cos you can see their faces, those first ten or twelve rows is where you’re gonna pick the girls you’re gonna fuck after the show, you’re like lining them up, basically like of that girls got nice tits, that girls missing her front teeth I don’t wanna fuck her. You know you’re gonna look at those girls, you can’t, the further back you go they all start to look hot from a distance, in the dark, so, you try to pick the ones that are pretty close anyway so, there’s your answer for that.

D: there you go. There’s a few youtube videos floating around of some of your club shows, the last one I saw had Vinnie Paul and as you call him Chaz Kruger up on stage, and if that weren’t enough you were making fun of them the whole time, certain before they got close enough to hit you. Is that something you guys like to do if you see someone?
S: You know what? There’s so many things on youtube, but I know that night you’re talking about, ‘cos that only happened one time and both those dudes were totally hammered, you know, it’s a funny thing ‘cos Chad, I like to call him Chaz ‘cos I’ve known him for quite a long time and people don’t realise how heavy metal he is, he takes a lot of shit ‘cos he’s you know Nickelback guy, but deep down he’s pretty metal and right after that show he went out, he went drinking, two days he was drinking in strip bars up all night, and Vinnie ran into him the second night that he was out. This was in Vegas, and Vinnie went out the next night and he saw Chaz, Chad you know, and um, Vinnie like you know, apparently Chad had been out like the whole night from the night before, he still hadn’t gone home yet. He pissed himself and shit it was awesome, totally heavy metal.
D: sweet.
S: He was so drunk he peed himself in a strip joint.
D: That happens all the time here in NZ
S: [laughs]

D: there’s another one, a facebook comment. As soon as your show was announced in NZ there was all these online things and someone made the point of noticing and I gotta ask this as well, what your comment on it is. They said it takes an enormous set of balls to play the song “Asian hooker” in Japan. Is that you guys pushing the envelope in terms of common decency, manners and taste, or did your tour rider get mixed up?
S: you know what , a lot of people have probably thought when they’ve seen the festivals we’ve done in Japan. I don’t know if it went over well or not, ‘cos we never got invited back, and maybe that’s saying something but that was the first song we ever played in Japan in front of about twenty thousand people at the Loud Park Festival and we opened up with “Asian Hooker” and you know, what else can you say, I though they loved it, the crowd went nuts, I saw a lot of Japanese boobs.

D: With your first one, Feel the Steel, it was an almost classic mix of comedy and glam but with the second one [balls out] it’s gotten very misogynistic, certainly in some songs, do you have much problems with protesting womens/religious or conservative type groups at your shows?
S: No, you know, we’ve never had anybody, we’ve never had any picket lines or protesters and uh, most of the women, I’ve never seen a women at our show look offended, that came to see us. Although we did do a show just about four days ago in a place called Hershey [spelling?] Pennsylvania, we did a festival with a bunch of other bands, I don’t even know how we got on the festival because we did, I was Steel Panther, New Kids on the Block, there was Kelly Clarkson played this festival, the Backstreet boys were at this festival, and it was Steel Panther. There were some women in the front row that I was thrusting my nine incher at, and they looked incredibly offended. But, a lot of the time those girls who look super offended because they think you’re sexist or misogynistic [tele-operator jumps in with 2minute warning] they’re the first to suck your dick backstage.
D: [laughs]
S: [laughs, obviously didn’t hear the tele-operator] they like it, I don’t know why that is.
D: I made a comment here, if you don’t have any- would you like some, because I’m sure an email to the local college women’s group with your song lyrics would have them turning up in droves.
S: yeah, you saying you’re gonna invite them down to the show?
D: yeah, have them protesting outside the show, it’ll be good, make the news.
S: make a flyer or something.
D: yeah,
S: Maybe we’ll send ‘em a picture of me naked. I’m sure those girls if they came to the show, they’d probably quit that club. [chuckles]

D: We gotta wrap up so- Are you guys, Steel Panther, looking forward to coming to NZ and destroying our precious innocence, as it were?
S: Oh can’t wait. New Zealand’s gonna be the best show we’ve done all year, I guarantee it, and I’m having new Spandex made for it.

Parkway Drive NZ show, Dec 2012

Tickets are on sale now for this show, which features I Killed the Prom Queen, Depths and Too Late.
The venue is licensed and all ages, but from past experience getting a drink, or certainly a regular supply of drinks, can be a mission..

Parkway drive is a funny one when regarding fans, I guess, people either love them or can't be bothered. But no matter your opinion of the band, they are now and have been for a few years now, an international band with a seemingly constant international tour schedule and they pop over to gig in NZ on a regular, almost yearly basis. All good I say.

8 ft North Island tour

The early 2000's are back again! I am reasonably sure I saw most of the incarnations of this band through out the years; I remember catching them at an instore at Real Groovy, I saw them on that random late night music show when jackhammer collapsed... or atleast I'm pretty sure I did- look I somehow lived through years of debauchery & I can't always pin point everything with too much accuracy... I do know I last saw them at Shadows bar (on Auckland Uni campus)

I am lead to believe that Auckland band Downfall of Humanity are on the bill for the Nov 3rd show.

Just One Fix added to Fear Factory show

I've no doubt fans were pretty stoked when back in form Fear Factory (disagree with back-in-form? you obviously haven't checked out their 2 most recent releases: "The Industrialist" and "Mechanize"), when they announced a NZ show, at the powerstation on the 22nd of this month (September).

Not long after the announcement, legendary and recently reformed NZ plant-metal band 8 Foot Sativa were set as support.
Fittingly, thrashers, Just One Fix have today been announced as another local support. I say fittingly as Fear-factory-forerunners, Ministry have a song with the same name as well as a Sepultura cover. But, to be fair, I don't know where the bands name came from, and if I did- I've forgotten.

Further more, J.O.F will be in Palmerston north & Wellington this weekend (7th & 8th Sept) then at Zeal West on the 14th and Kings Arms on the 15th with Christchurch's Tainted and then again at the Kings Arms on the 5th of October supporting Aussie powermetallers Lord.https://www.facebook.com/justonefixnz

Make sure to check out the transcript of my recent interview with Dino Cazares, guitarist/founding member of Fear Factory here: http://www.hardfastheavy.com/p/interviews.html
