Dale, host of the Hard Fast and Heavy show calls Oderus Urungus from the band GWAR, on the 26th October 2010 about many things, including their appearance at No Sleep til Auckland. Aired on the show on the 1st of November 2010.
ODERUS: Hello!
DALE: Hi, this is Dale speaking from New Zealand, am I speaking to... the ... man from GWAR?
ODERUS: Yes, yes, you're talking to Oderus from GWAR.
DALE: Oderus from GWAR, so how has your time with GWAR been?
ODERUS: Well right now we're engaged in a... act of assault against the population of the planet Earth through our musical, metallic, mutated, mayhem, metal horror show! Our new album is out next month! The Bloody Pit of Horror! We're currently on tour in the United States, getting ready for that cataclysmic event, and getting ready to come to New Zealand and Australia for the very first time and expose the peoples of your fair countries To... The... Sickest.. Band... In Rock n Roll History!
DALE: Excellent, now: you're in Ohio at the moment and tomorrow you're gonna be in East St Louis, I'm assuming the states is a big place, so it must help being a war-mongering space alien with all the travel you have to do?
ODERUS: Oh no, we enjoy it. Allot of people don't realise the human cities are linked with sub-terrainian tunnels that honey comb your planet, and there's often a very convenient, kind of, like, little jet cars you can drive around on. So, we've got a whole system underneath the planet where we just kind of pop up from various cave entrances, right before we play. Doesn't seem like a lot of time goes by.
DALE: Sweet, so coming to New Zealand isn't gonna be a problem then?
ODERUS: Not at all, and it's just, uh... it's really all we've ever done with our lives, is go from one place to another, you know, set up our war camp, begin our savage sounds, draw in the humans, slaughter them, fight giant robots, and finally feed our pet dinosaur Gor-gor. So everything is going to be wonderful, we'll just have to see what happens when we get to New Zealand: there's always some super-powered A-Hole trying to shut the party down, that we have to deliver some swift kicks to the ass.
DALE: Hell yeah, now recently you were Grand Marshall at the Toronto zombie walk & awarded Harvard Lampoon's Most Terrible vile disgusting disturbed yet revoltingly awesome band ever: such things must be quite the ego rush for you..
ODERUS: No, not really. I see them as completely meaningless accolades, bestowed upon us by a retarded child, and that would be the human race, that we created by fucking apes- I might remind you of that. So, uh, pitiful attempts to assuage our boundless wrath and, you know, if they think you're gonna get off any easier because of these awards they keep heaping on us, they are completely wrong.
DALE: Now as you mentioned, you have "Bloody Pit of Horror" coming out soon, and I personally couldn't get enough of "Beyond Hell" and thought "Lust in Space" was pretty cool, do you think I'm gonna enjoy your new album?
ODERUS: Yes I do, I think people are really gonna enjoy it, like all GWAR albums it sounds completely different to the one before it, but it's heavy as hell and even tuned down and very extra nasty to the point where it literally sounds like the guitars are throwing up- in a good way. But anyway, it's a throbbing pulsating kinda sound, it's a very dirty, very nasty sound. I think people are really gonna enjoy it.
DALE: What is the process of putting together a GWAR album? I imagine it being rather sticky and involving more than a few human sacrifices...
ODERUS: Well, it's very violent. You know, a lot of fighting and arguments, breaking of equipment over peoples heads, and stuff like that. But at the end of the day we've got our metal, you know we just get in there and yell and scream at each other and they record that and they make music out of it. I'm not sure what the hell it is, I just know we get there in front of the people, plug those guitars in and everything goes crazy!
DALE: Awesome, you're coming to New Zealand on a big tour package that's headlined by Megadeth, is there anything, mudslinging you can say about him, Dave Mustaine?
ODERUS: I haven't met him yet, so I'm not going to talk shit about him until i have the chance to observe his habitat. Actually, I have to admit I'm actually quite a big Megadeth fan and I'm really looking forward to seeing him play on this tour, so I'm gonna save my mudslinging for Rob Zombie and Lordi.
DALE: Excellent, generic question here, but are you looking forward to slaying a Kiwi crowd?
ODERUS: Yes, we fully expect kiwis to taste different, we've heard you're 9 feet tall, that should be interesting. You know, it's a new eco-system to destroy and hopefully the entire island.
DALE: I understand you were trapped in a frozen tomb down in Antarctica, given New Zealands close proximity to your former prison, is that a reason why you haven't been here before?
ODERUS: Well, we went straight from Antarctica to America, we were flown there by our manager Sleazy P. Martini, we've been living there pretty much ever since. We tried to get to New Zealand a few times, but we simply got lost- it wasn't until Google Earth that we managed to figure out this world geography, kinda thing. So, after 25 years of searching we've finally gonna make it.
DALE: Excellent, Now we are the land of the "Lord of the Rings" has or will your tour manager try and steer you away from partying, or slaying too many Orcs?
ODERUS: Actually, you know, we were hoping to face-rape some Hobbits. That's just kind of a tradition in the GWAR camp, is to take Hobbits and rape their faces off, fill those chubby little cheeks with our filthy man-prods, rooting about in retched abandonment and just chewing these Hobbits faces off. Few creatures deserve death more than those little fuzzy footed fucks.
DALE: So I take it, you're not a fan of Elijah Wood?
ODERUS: Oh... Oh he's such a... No i Don't Like Him At All!
DALE: (laughs) I noticed your shows integrate quite a few elements [i.e political], not just the crazy metal thing, in a country, you're heading to New Zealand were we've have 2 female leaders, Rastafarian, gay and trans-gender members of parliament [i.e different to the United States] is that something GWAR could work with?
ODERUS: Oh.. I salute the people of New Zealand for having trans-gender council members I encourage them to have more trans-animal, kinda necrophiliac, bestial activity. Making our animal friends happy, by giving them public sex in government buildings. Animals are often made to live out-doors, in little sticks, like little houses made of sticks and stuff, it's terribly unfair, and, uh, dogs do appreciate it when you suck them off. I'd like to see more of that for the people of New Zealand and hopefully after our show we will bring this to you people, the gift of necrophiliac, anal, bestial, dead dog sex.
DALE: I don't suppose you've heard the sheep shagging jokes, down here?
ODERUS: Oh, we heard all about it, and we're hoping it's true.
DALE: I noticed you seem to have quite a sense of occasion, I'm referring to your appearances on Fox news as compared to a youtube video interview I saw with you swearing your mouth off.
ODERUS:Well, they do give me tranquilisers before I appear on the air and they throw a big metal canvas kind of chain mail blanket over the Cuttlefish of Cthulu. So yes they've managed to knock me down a peg or two, but quite frankly the drugs and the sex and the power that I get from appearing on Fox news, and the parties later with Bill O'Reily, CIA opperatives Osama binladen, it more than makes up for it. They're pretty much gonna to cut out whatever I say that doesn't work for them anyway, so I just try... I play my mental.. i play my little game with them, you know. I think I get away with some pretty edgy shit, but you will notice I am the most foul mouthed person on the show and huge sections of my appearences are usually silent.
DALE: Well there's no such editing on this show, you can say whatever you want...
ODERUS: I like that, and it makes me much more comfortable.
DALE: I imagine setting up a gig must be quite the ~Ziltoidian~ effort, no?
ODERUS: Well no, we wear these clothes all the time, in fact they're not clothes so much as our birthday suits, born in them even, as it were. I've never washed or cleaned myself, so that makes everything stick to my body in great rancid heaps, so uh, it's how we roll, it smells really bad but the fans love us.
DALE: Now, you mentioned Gor-gor, he's coming to New Zealand, am I right?
ODERUS: I'm not... oh, oh, oh don't lock me down to that because I do believe he'll be showing up in Australia, I don't know if he'll make the swim out to kiwi-land or not.
DALE: Now a few years ago you worked with Devin Townsend, how do you get along with his Ziltoid?
ODERUS: We never met him exactly, he was up zipping around in his interstella space craft! whatever the fuck it was! No, we just dealt with Devin and really that was more than enough

In GWAR news...
As the awesome news of the no sleep til Auckland set times being released hit us last night- GWAR have announce (via facebook) that their pet dinosaur Gor-Gor "has arrived in Perth, Australia, to prepare for the coming of GWAR!"
To the casual observer this news might not bare the same oomph, but to realise the full force of GWAR is unable to be present in New Zealand deflates my massive enthusiasm to see the band, for a second.
This is, of course, just confirmation of what Oderus Urungus told me during my interview with him a few weeks ago, he suggested Gor-Gor might not make the swim to NZ. Confusing, because the band apparently used a network of underground tunnels to move from show to show.
To quote Oderus, from my interview:
"...the human cities are linked with sub-terrianian tunnels, that honey-comb your planet and there's often very convenient kind of jet cars you can drive around on..." This begs the question Why Gor-Gor couldn't make it to NZ, maybe he's too big for the tunnels, or a bit claustrophobic, who knows...
To be Fair, this is what Oderus had to say
DALE: "Gor-Gor's coming to New Zealand, am I right?"
ODERUS: "I'm not... oh, oh, oh don't lock me down to that because I do believe he'll be showing up in Australia, I don't know if he'll make the swim out to kiwi-land or not."

Here's a recent shot of Gwar I found on the internet. |
Timetable for No Sleep til Auckland released
After a tense Friday afternoon, where there was an announcement that the timetable would be released on Friday, it happen to come out just after I walk out the bar to go check out Darklight Corporation, Just One Fix Mutangent and Tainted at the Dogs Bollix.
Don't bother trying to organise your day by what times to be where- there are no clashes as there are two stages, so- like the BDO arrangement, as one band plays, the next band is setting up on the other stage- this means constant music from 12.20 to 10pm!

Fornax chemica opening for the Melvins
While the Dunedin and Wellington supports have been finalised (Dunedin- Mountaineater, Soulseller. Welly- Beastwars, Neon Bastard)
The Auckland & Chch supports have yet to be announced, but on the bands facebook page, Fornax Chemica have stated they're supporting the melvins, probably in Auckland, but could also be in chch as well- who erally knows (And I'm not feeling up to trawling through the various forums where the answer might just been hiding)

My new Gig shirt: mobile- self-shameless- plug
Did anyone else have the problem of not having many/any metal shirts etc when you started to go out to metal shows?
I remember back in the day, all I had for ages was a solitary Sepultura shirt that I managed to get from Real Groovy or something. I wore it out to any and all gigs I went to, because I figured as a relatively wide genre spanning band (i.e. starting as death metal) it was a safe bet.
So, with this new 'dot com' site I have running now, I got a shirt (cheaply) printed up and it shall now serve as my gig shirt.

Consolidating and expanding my stings
Over this last weekend, I've been hunting down old radio-stings (i.e "I'm >band member< from >band< and you're listening to the hard fast & heavy show" that kinda thing) from the many interviews I've conducted over the years, with the intention of creating my own sting-bank.
It's not as simple a task as it may sound, original (digital) versions of many are long gone, several CD versions (i use to play on air) are all over the place, if not lost. And in some cases all I have is the raw version- straight from the phone line.
With all the glorious interviews I done in recent times, especially those stemming from the no sleep tour, I want to have a defined place for all these stings- so you, our audience, won't forget I talked to Oderus from GWAR, or Slayers front man etc..
But I'll also be looking to expand this 'sting-bank' especially with local bands- so if you're a kiwi band that gets air time on my show but don't seem to have a sting with me- get in touch, or I might get hold of you, for 15-20 minutes of one-on-one chatting over the phone lines (recorded for radio, or course..)

Interview with Jesse Leach (ex-KSE, Times of Grace)
A few days ago I had a phone interview with former Killswitch Engage, now current Times of Grace vocalist, Jesse Leach. It went well and he (as with everyone I talk to) was awesome. I had to rush back to my day-job as soon as the interview was done, which is why this post is coming now & not straight afterwards.
On the next show I'll be playing my interview with Mitch, Vocalist for Suicide Silence, the Jesse Leach interview will be aired on the show after that..

November Metal Hammer
I just managed to pick up the November issue of Metal Hammer, I don't normally buy magazines, and when I do I go for Terroriser mag.
However, the November issue of Metal Hammer has a Dimmu Borgir Badge & beanie, a talking opening cover that says "Unlock and open the gates HAHAHA" i don't fully understand why this is, a) funny and, Secondly- scary (as the hype on the front cover would suggest)

Upcoming (phone) interview with Jesse Leach
We have been awarded the opportunity to interview (phone) Jesse Leach- former/original vocalist for metalcore heavy weights Killswitch Engage and currently in a new band "Times of Grace".
My call goes through next week so stay tuned near the end of the month for me to air it on the show.
I might be showing my age a bit, maybe, but I remember when "alive or just breathing" came out, I own a physical copy of their 1st self-titled album, not the re-released version & Howard Jones still seems like the new guy.
I found them out in my usual random, but not kinda way- I came across Zao first- I picked up their '98 album "Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest" from Utopia Records in Sydney (when it was across the road from the George St Cinemas) and I guess when you dig one of the bands credited for being an orginal member of a genre (metalcore) then the band that brings it to the masses isn't that hidden from view..

Formerly free song still available.
A few weeks ago, we posted that original Killswitch Engage vocalist, Jesse Leach, and current guitarist Adam D have formed a band (Time of Grace) together and in that post we mentioned they had a song (Strength in Numbers) up for a free time-limited download and that their album (The Hymn of a Broken Man) comes out mid January 2011.
If you missed the free download, but still wanna check out the song, literally, months before the album's released- search for it on iTunes, it's on there now.
I dear say, it's odd that the song's still available- many other time-limited downloads are only available (as far as I can usually tell) during the specified time frame, afterwards you seem to have to wait to the album release...

New Albums: 2011's looking pretty damn good.
Skindred, a Welsh ragga-metal band are releasing "Union Black" May 2nd 2011. We've played a few Skindred songs on the hfhshow over the years..
Unearth are getting, famed metalcore producer and Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam D to produce their new album.
hfhshow folk metal favourites, Korpiklaani will be releasing a new album, "Ukon Wacka" Feb 4th 2011. Ukon Wacka was an ancient .."pagan sacrificial feast... which a special made beer richly flowed. As can be expected from the title, this album has an ancient and very folky feel and is totally in finnish" (English translations will be supplied with CD)
A song, "Tequila" especially written for South American fans of the band.
All Shall Perish are writing a new album, after "...successful tours at home and abroad..." (I guess abroad didn't extend as far as NZ's shores).
Hate Eternal have been in pre-production for the past couple of months for a new album, which is due to be one of their "...heaviest, most twisted, evil, melodic and insane albums yet..."

This week on the show: 8th Nov 2010
On the show this week we'll be having Sinate up to discuss their upcoming NZ tour, and all other things Sinate related.
Tune in to hear some new Daath, Oceano, some thing new from Tom G Fischer's Triptykon, Neaera, All That Remains, Deathspell Omega, and as many more that we can fit into our 2hours.
University exams are coming to an end for me- my last is tommorrow (tuesday) but I'm still doing the show, how's that for dedication.
Happy B'day to brothers, Sam and Jamie: if it weren't for facebook I'd have no idea when anyones birthdays were.

Septicflesh finish recording.
Popular amongst listeners of the hfhshow, Greek muso's Septicflesh have finished recording their new album, due out early 2011, you can be sure we'll be spinning a few tracks from it!
An email update from record label, Seasons of Mist reads:
Greek demons SEPTICFLESH just finished recordings the successor of 2008's "Communion". After a long period of intense work in Athens, Prague and Sweden, the evolution of the band's Symphonic Death sound has been achieved with the help of the Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague and well known artist / producer Peter Tägtgren.
130 musicians were involved in the recording process. Besides the traditional classic orchestra instruments, this time SEPTICFLESH incorporated harpsichord, some bizarre ethnic instruments and a boy soprano to their sound, pursuing a more "horror soundtrack" approach. Of course, the guitars will still shred you to death!
The release of the forthcoming 10-song album is expected for the first quarter of 2011. In the meantime, a brand new song will be available worldwide as an exclusive digital download single from this December 17th on."

Periphery writing new material
Another band we've talked to this year, Periphery, are working on a new E.P and 2nd full length album.
the band released their self-titled debut via Roadrunner records & they were in the australia R.R offices when we talked. They're about to start a big US tour with Darkest Hour thru November & December.
Their update reads as follows:
“Periphery is well into the writing process for our upcoming EP. We have tracked most of the instrumentation and vocals and are making final tweaks on everything but you guys are in for a treat. There will be some re-tweaked material, some rare material and some brand new material on it so there will be something for everyone.
We have also been working on material for our second full-length now, so that we can have as much time to refine it before we record the final product. Be sure to check our MySpace and Facebook pages regularly for our updates. Our goal with our music is to cover as much ground as possible while staying true to our sound, and hopefully evolve from previous work all at once. It’s a tall order but a fun challenge nonetheless, and we are doing our best to ensure that the new material will fulfill that goal.
We want to thank all of our fans for their love and support. We would be nowhere without you and we want to be able to meet you all and thank you in person, so be sure to come out to the shows and hang out with us.”

The Sword are back
As you all know, a little while ago (now former) Drummer Trivett promptly departed from the band, for personal reasons. Weeks before this we at the hfhshow had talked to Trivett ahead of The Swords supporting slot for Metallica down in Chch.
but news from the bands facebook page reads as follows:

HFH Show 3 Inches of Blood Phone Intervew
I just finished talking to Shane Clark, guitarist for Canadian battle/heavy metal band 3 Inches of Blood, while I was calling from the heart (or almost, certainly central) Auckland, he was on an Idyllic sounding Vancouver Is.
My phone bill this month is gonna be a hefty one, what with all the international calls to Canada, America, Sweden etc etc.
We have Sam from Sinate coming up to the show this coming Monday, he'll be telling us all about their overseas exploits, upcoming tour and new album.
Which means we'll be airing the 2 as-yet-unaired interviews (i.e. Mitch from Suicide Silence and This one, Shane from 3 Inches of Blood) on later shows- but December 10th is creeping up quickly so no mucking around: if you haven't gotten your ticket, get one now! (to No Sleep til Auckland, that is..)
Now, thanks to google image search, here's a shot of Shane Clark (3 Inches of Blood)

Here's one, soon, for our gig section
Those who went to/ remember a gig on Easter this year at the Transmission Room, Black FKN Friday, which featured Auckland & Christchurch bands (and Cripple Mr Onion, who I imagine could call both cities home) as well as a debut (I think) performance from The Mark of Man, and a band who came dressed in dresses...
But Chch's Zerstiren performed that night, and they are making the hike back up to the big smoke for a show at the Kings Arms on the day after the BDO (Jan 22nd), this time bringing:
Blindfolded and Led to the Woods (BALTTW) who made news by appearing on Tween show hosted by someone called Erin Simpson.
And;
The Murderous Seth, which is made up of 2 guys from Blindfolded and led to the woods, with the other two coming from Athenic and Word of God (both now ex members of those bands).
The night's rounded off by The Mark of Man & Mt Eden massive: Anabyss.
Zerstiren, themselves, have their debut album, Ave Pangenitor, being mixed and mastered in Austria!
Tracklist:
1.The Conquered Commiserate
2.Ley Lines (feat. Ben Read)
3.Human Flesh
4.The Earth will Shake
5.Dirge to Bloodlust
6.Agnosis
7.Kallisti
8.Hyperion
9.I - Death Vibration Mantra
10.II - Quantum Confluence
11.III - The Great Dictator

Razorwyre offers EP for free download
A little while ago we got an email from the band regarding this new website of theirs, now that they're publicising it:
Go here to download their EP for Free: http://www.razorwyreband.com/
The band formerly known as 'Gaywyre' are working on writing a debut full length, but offer their EP for free. If you're thinking you remember the name- they opened for Exodus & played at Galatos the day after exodus, with Dreams of the Dead, recently.

Tonight's show is gonna be one for the books.
I'll be airing my interview with GWAR vocalist Oderus Urungus and accompanying it with a mildly fitting "The Ultimate Bohab" (listen to the song/ google the lyrics& you'll understand why I'm happy with my phone interview)
Tune in to hear Oderus on Megadeth, Hobbits, New Zealanders, Sheep shagging, being on Fox News & so much more..
**WARNING** Some of the interview may offend some people, guidance by a decent adult or other metal head is recommended. Oderus Urungus is a heavy metal space monster, and acts as such**
We also feature new music from Rob Arnold of Chimaira fame's new side project- The Elite, also New Daath, Cradle of Filth. Helloween, Atheist, Ill Nino & N.Z's Ulcerate.
