Wicked gig poster of the Week.

Often requested on the show, Mothra are, as far as I can tell a multi-media extravaganza, and are capitalising on their recent bfm breakfast fancy new band appearence, recent Devin townsend project support slot & hfhshow air play to play a few gigs around town.

Other shows include: May 21st 'Side Effect' at 'Echo Bar' Browns Bay featuring Mothra, Sairalei, Emenda, lots of other bands, plus djs and giveaways etc...$10.

Also, their myspace page mentions a wellington gig at the SFBH mid june.

What is NZ music month?

The 10th anniversary of the month long promotion is currently upon us, and various T.V, radio and newspaper etc outlets eager to prove that they are down with the kids, by plugging tried and tested muso's (i.e. Opshop) who, for some unknown reason, haven't permanently fled overseas to larger markets.
But as NZMM ticks over double digits, I (as an enthusiast of a less than mainstream genre of music, i.e. metal) gotta wonder what NZMM actually is. Even as a host of radio show, it has had little impact on my month of May each year.

NZMM is run by the NZ Music Commission, the board of which includes: (From http://nzmusic.org.nz/about/)

Anthony Healey - Chairperson (Director of Operations for APRA. Board Member, SOUNZ)
Richard Thorne (Publisher of NZ Musician Magazine. Chair of MAINZ Advisory Board. Board Member METANZ - Music Education Trust of Aotearoa New Zealand)
Phil Howling (General Manager of Warner Music NZ. Board member of RIANZ.)
Darryl Parker (Director Finance & Operations. Sony Music NZ)
Chris Hocquard- Deputy Chairperson (Principal of Dominion Law. Chair of 95BFM. Owner of Amplifier.co.nz)
Teresa Patterson (Partner in CRS Music Management. Promoter of Big Day Out NZ & Executive Council member of the Music Managers Forum (MMF))
Mark Kneebone (Chairperson of IMNZ. Manager Isaac Promotions and Tardus Music)
Ngahiwi Apanui (Principal Te Aiorangi Communications. Composer/Singer, Puatatangi Committee. Member, Event Manager - National Maori Music Summit 2006)

Along with the commission- NZ on Air, RIANZ, APRA, Independant Music NZ and the Radio Broadcasters Association are also 'closely involved' (nzmusic.org.nz)

NZ on Air fund plenty of local televisual and music etc programs etc etc (like spending just over $6.7million on 13 new episodes of "Go Girls" season 3 i guess, a piece on information I now cannot erase from my mind, I avoid this program like the plague and it's mere existence infuriates and confuses me)

But musically, they fund musicians and bands which enables them to release music and videos, it seems you can get about $5,000 to put togeather a music video, and if you're supper lucky (or more to the point, super popular) $50,000 for a new album.

Looking on www.nzonair.govt.nz already established artists, like Nesian Mystik, Anika Moa, Opshop, pluto..(the list goes on) are, or seem to be receiving this $50,000 to release new albums. You gotta ask, if these well known groups need $50,000 to release new material, how the are 'average' bands meant to compete...

I don't know any specifics, no doubt that money is a loan & paid back via sales, but it looks like a resource that seems available only to a limited section of musicians, i.e. most probably tween media favs. Understandably, it mostly works fine- probably 90% of the population's music taste is based around what radio station they listen to- how often are questions like: "What music do you like?" answered with a radio frequency. But it's not called NZ "pop music" on air, or NZ pop-music month.

At the end of it, I'm stuck with the thought that NZMM is a vehicle to validate NZ on Air (music) funding choices.

here's some shit I heard:

This last week I recorded an interview with Scott, founding member of one of the longest standing metal bands in NZ, Chch's Human. They are touring NZ and Australia through May. (See the poster) There is a change however, friends of the show, Bloodletting, have with drawn from the Auckland show, replaced by Nullifier. Only recently we had Bloodletting's Josh and Andhe, with Never Repent, up in studio for a chat.

Human released their latest album "Cadaver Academy in 2009, and Never Repent & Bloodletting have a split EP.
Check out this monday's hfhshow for the interview with Scott & music from "Cadaver Academy" and a few tracks from Defamer too.

Other News that i was probably told to check out weeks ago, but only now 're-'remember...
- Auckland's Anabyss have new material up on their myspace page.
- as does Svartalheim

- The "NZ Metal Army" are out in full force, flooding the hfhshow facebook event requests with many invites to :"ANNiHiLTAiON ACROSS THE NATiON TOUR 2010" While I don't understand the blatant discrimination against capital 'i's, and for the purposes of a cheap attempt at humour, which would undoubtedly flop, as too few are free from the burden of The Typo- I would like to point out the incorrect spelling of annihiltaion (Anni-hilt-a-ion) they are kicking off May's NZ Music Month with a BBQ & shit-tons of bands at the Kings Arms.

Facebook says the dates are:
MAY 1st : KiNGS ARMS, Auckland
Doors: 6pm, BBQ: 6.30pm, First Band: 7pm
MAY 7th : KRAZY JACKS, Tauranga
Doors: 8pm
MAY 8th : AFTER DARK, Rotorua
Doors: 7pm
MAY 14th : WARD LANE, Hamilton
Doors: 6.30pm
MAY 15th : THE CABANA, Napier
Doors: 6.30pm
MAY 28th : THE ROYAL, Palmerston North
Doors: 8pm
MAY 29th : GARDEN CLUB, Wellington
Doors: 6.30pm

Molest the Episco-myspace

Auckland based metal super group "Molest The Episcopate" have their myspace up: http://www.myspace.com/molesttheepiscopate and on that myspace are 2 songs, available for Free streaming.

You can catch their debut performance this saturday (April 10th) opening for Behemoth & co. MtE are on at 7.50pm sharp.
Facebook quote:
Born from the smouldering fires of a veritable feast of New Zealand's best heavy acts, Auckland City's MOLEST THE EPISCOPATE formed in early 2010 as a collaboration between Ross McDougall (ex-Antagonist AD), Jeremy Suckling (Dawn of Azazel), Paul Blomfield (ex-Force Fed Trauma), Gareth Craze (ex-Graymalkin) and Josh Hughes (Bloodletting). The mission statement of the band is simple: to perform cruel, modern death metal as ugly as it is titantically heavy, and to stand aesthetically and lyrically in stark, unwavering opposition to religion of all stripes, socialism, pacifism, environmentalism and the anti-thought cults of modern liberalism and conservatism alike

Metallica coming to NZ?

The rumours have been rife, and while this news brings up one step closer, it by no means is a concrete fact- please remember this. These days i only consider it a done deal when i'm walking through the doors at the gig, but if/when tickets go on sale etc is also good.

Facebook friends of ours: Rachel and Kyle had the first updates relating to the news that i saw- a quick scroll down and someone else had posted the link:
http://www.3news.co.nz/Metallica-on-their-way-to-NZ/tabid/418/articleID/149577/Default.aspx

Metal legends Metallica will be playing shows in Australia and New Zealand in November.

At a recent news conference in Bogota, Columbia, when asked what their plans were after their current tour of South America, singer James Hetfield told reporters, "Europe," then drummer Lars Ulrich added: "We're staying out and doing dates up till November, in Australia and New Zealand, is where we're heading in November.

"And then after that we're gonna take a little bit of chill time, because it's been a couple of years on the road."

Ulrich said after that, there will probably be a new record.
3 News

Mothra: www.myspace.com/mothrasound

Mothra, who many of you would have seen as one of the support acts for the mighty Devin Townsend, and his Project.
I have a couple of their songs, which are instrumentals, they're open to a vocalist, but want to find the right vocalist.
They also appeared on Mikey Havocs (95bfm) breakfast show for a "Fancy New Band" late last year.
More material should be out in a few months or something

They have a gig coming up in April at the Dogs Bollix- Saturday 24th with Fornax Chemica and Frozen Alice.

Decapitated w/ Psycroptic, Origin & Misery Index @ the Transmisison Room

Had a wicked night out at the, surprisingly slightly-less-sweaty-than-other-times-i've-been-there, transmission room.

Ran into: Kyle (guest dj for the show from a couple of weeks back) & his mate Rachel (who was working at the gig & wanted me to know that the guys in the bands are really good dudes) Dan (never repent) Oli (svartalvheim- check out the link to their myspace page for a couple of new tracks recently posted up & Scaphist- who have a gig coming up on june 12th w/ Just One Fix) & Gav (Six Day War)

There's some technical issues with posting up pictures so i'll put 'em up later.

The Black Dahlia murder & Unearth set for 7 Aussie dates & 0 NZ dates.

From: http://www.metalobsession.net/
Two of America’s leading metal bands – The Black Dahlia Murder and Unearth - are set to co-headline an Australian tour in May/June, 2010. The tour will take in all usual Australian mainland capitals, with under 18 shows currently scheduled for both Brisbane and Melbourne.

I've really been digging the new BDM album, "Deflorate" would be awesome to see 'em in NZ, again...
