This Heavy Metal Show (HMS) airs over NYE

Here on the HMS: Hard Fast & Heavy Show we welcome 2013 in our usual manner, i.e the ritualistic offering of Heavy Metal to the airwaves. This year our last show of 2012, and our first of 2013 are the same event.

So when you're stuck for a Heavy Metal alternative to the bars/clubs/festivals elsewhere tune in this Monday from 11pm on Auckland's 95bfm.

Furthermore;
We promise nothing for 2013, you get nothing. (granted this is a bit dramatic, but I stand by what I said: Nothing!)

Here's me being talked about

If you're signed up to the 95bfm email list, or more affectionately: the bmail, you would've likely have just received the final one for the year and the featured dj spot is me.

Yes, I am posting about being mentioned by my own station, were I on commercial telly I'd be calling it a cross over, or on the news- it'd almost be a headline story, on a mid to slow news day.. I like it, mainly because it I didn't write it and it's complimentary.

Monday, 17 December 2012

Who would be on yours?

For music fans, as an exercise of anti-productism (SYL reference); using the models used by the mass marketed and sales based compilation cds that flood television adverts this time of year, but flipped on its head (i.e. used not for commercial gain but rather kick starting your grey matter by making you remember).
  • Imagine you are the sole member of the market and based upon your personal sales and your personal listens- what bands would make up list? (Consider only bands with new material released between January 1st 2012 and now i.e. near enough to the end of 2012)
  • I haven't considered my full list but off the top I can tell you some of the following would appear:
    • Devin Townsend Project, Testament, Soulfly, 3 Inches of Blood, All Hail the Yeti, Meshuggah, A life once lost, Dethklok, Trollfest, The Faceless

CONVERGE
OLD MAN GLOOM

KINGS ARMS TAVERN
10th February, 2013

Anchor Presents:

Converge New Zealand February 2013

Heavy music’s most established and innovative band, Converge will return to Auckland, New Zealand in February 2013.

Considered one of the most intense, important, and influential metal/hardcore bands of all time, the band's latest album “All We Love We Leave Behind “ is the most integral album to date in a catalogue that's celebrated to an almost religious degree by countless fans of punk, metal and hardcore.

Credited with giving rise to a genre and influencing countless bands all over the world, Converge have always been the type of band that never fit into one subculture, creating a sound that is entirely their own. The band attribute that to the fact that since their 2001 landmark album Jane Doe, they haven't had any member changes and maintain the unwavering individualism and uncompromising artistic vision they had when they formed over 21 years ago.

Joining them on their exclusive Auckland date will be US supergroup Old Man Gloom. Tickets go on sale through UndertheRadar.co.nz & Real Groovy Stores 9th November 2012.

Hard Fast Heavy on Break

Many of you may have noticed that the 95bfm's 2 hours of Metal anti-dote to normality on a Monday night-Tuesday Morning in the form of The Hard, Fast & Heavy Show was not on air last week (Monday 29th October).

Unfortunately, it will not be on air this coming Monday (5th Nov) either, but we will return to the airwaves on the 12th of November and we'll be dragging up local battlers, Decortica to have a chat with them to find out what they've been up to.

I'm not sitting on my arse increasing the ass-imprint on my couch. I am so busy at the moment that I literally can not afford to spend the many hours it takes to prep a show, the 2hrs of being on air & the following Tuesday were I'm usually wiped out. But by the time I'm back on air a few major things will be off my plate and I'll be back better than ever.

Depths Interview

I just got off the phone with Josh, vocalist for Palmerston North death metallers, Depths, amongst other things talking about their new album "Revelation" (out October 26th on Deadboy records but exclusive pre-order packages will be on the Deadboy online store from the 8th Oct).

You will be able to hear my interview when I play it on the hard fast and heavy show in the coming weeks- closer to the album release date.

I'd like to thank Josh for talking to me, especially as the band had a (free) show at a house show in Levin, & in other tour news have a four date Aussie tour lined up for mid-end October.
  • They're also supporting Parkway Drive and I killed the Prom Queen at the Logan Campbell Center (auckland) December 12th (I only just remembered this now, not in time to ask Josh about it, but looks like a sweet gig though!)

Their album is out soon, and with the pre-order starting soon, I'd recommend you get in quick least you miss out- as the nearly 6000 likes on the bands facebook page might suggest.

New Way Home on hfhshow

Make sure you tune in to the hard fast and heavy show on the 8th of October (i.e. next week) because we should be having someone from local band New Way Home in to tell us all about what's going on.

Check out the poster below: the gig's on Friday 12th October, now at Galatos. FYI it's behind The Studio (K Rd) so watch out for needles and used condoms on the street connecting from K Rd (I'm not joking, well it's serious but the mere fact that I'm raising it is kinda a joke- a funny cos it's true: I did see said items of rubbish, years ago I went to a gig or two at galatos, it might be alright now but I don't know.)

1st NZ show: Steel Panther at The Powerstation (2nd Oct '12)

These are the best shots I could get off my phone camera, which is a nokia something or rather- i.e. not an apple or samsung fancy pants device (though I did see a fair whack of them being held up, recording the show, no doubt, for youtube or something)

I didn't bother with the support act, but did get to the venue in time for Steel Panther. Pity I wasn't as amped up/drunk as the crowd, but it was still an awesome show. The first sign of things to come was when they took the first of many song breaks, to pat themselves on the back for playing two songs in a row without a hitch.

Around the hour make, or so, an audience (possibly drunk) member behind me obviously failed to grasp the full concept of a Steel Panther show when, during a song break, he yelled out something to the effect of "Shut the F up, Play a f***ing song, ya F****ts!" Also noticed a disgruntled audience member in the upstairs bit giving the band the finger- maybe he knew one of the girls that were brought up on stage and didn't appreciate the subtleties of the ensuing groupie etc jokes.

They've definitely honed their performance to be a fine balance of humour (obviously- but the dirty kind), crowd pleaser's and musicianship, best highlighted by lead guitarist, Satchels solo where he treats the crowd to a medley of well known heavy metal song riffs that amps up the crowd, especially when he gets behind the drum kit, still playing guitar, to use the bass drum with a spare foot.

Also, I'd push anyone to find a moment where the band members are out of character. Even when front man Michael Star is taking center stage, Lexi (Bass) constantly plays the air head and Satchel will fain being out of breath after an 80's heavy metal high kick. Granted, these characters are ingrained, with Steel Panther formerly known as Metal School (?Spelling may be different and I'm sure there were a few other band names). But my point is, they had polished their 80's schtick to a fine point well before their 2009 debut (feel the steel).

In the end, the Steel Panther show was top notch- not only for fans of the genre but of performance, and no doubt critics will spout about the non-stop running sex joke but applying an argument for pop music- the crowds would've have come out, and world wide- continue to come out to see them, if they sucked at their jobs (I am comfortable in applying this argument here, simply because of the majority of the bands songs unsuitability for commercial radio, the naughty lyrics and over the top 80's sex crazed rock star joke- which at the same time I fully understand is their appeal)

A Life Once Lost Interview

Early this morning (a Tuesday- after being up late for the show..) I gave Bob Meadows (vocalist) from A Life Once Lost a call- lucky for him, it was a comfortable time in the afternoon in the states.

The bands new upcoming album "Ecstatic Trance" is out on the 22nd October (in the states) & internationally on the 16th of November on Seasons of Mist records, and after hearing him talk about it I really wanna check it out!

It is important that you follow the links below, as googling for 'a life once lost' doesn't always get you there...

Bits of my Steel Panther interview finds its was to a paper

My interview with Satchel of the infamous Steel Panther, ahead of their October 2nd Auckland (New Zealand) show at the Powerstation, seems to be rather popular.

Not only has the bands official facebook page linked the URL from this site for it, (The transcript that is: http://www.hardfastheavy.com/2012/09/transcript-of-steel-panther-interview.html) but NZ's Truth paper has used bits from it in a piece on the band.

The highlighted bits are from my transcript, from this very site.
I still have the original audio. Yes, they did have my permission to use the
interview that I had put on the internet for anyone to see. No, I didn't get paid for it,
but then again I've never gotten paid for anything radio related so
what difference does it make.

Steel Panther links us on their FB

The other day I finally got round to posting the transcript of my interview with Steel Panther guitarist, Satchel. Pretty quickly the Steel Panther facebook page posted a link to it (in the pic below it's the one with Satchel) The traffic to http://www.hardfastheavy.com/2012/09/transcript-of-steel-panther-interview.html exploded over night, turning it into our site's second most viewed post.

Here's the link to the post: https://www.facebook.com/steelpantherkicksass/posts/153689478103648

The band are in NZ on October 2nd, here's the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/253290494790457/

Needless to say, I'm pretty chuffed.

metalsucks thinks LoD sucks

http://www.metalsucks.net/2012/09/07/legacy-of-disorders-last-man-standing-makes-me-the-first-man-sleeping/
Legacy of Disorder, originating from Nelson, New Zealand now seemingly based on the road as they support tour after tour of some pretty darn big names, only manage to score a 1/5 from American metal blog, Metalsucks.net, the same site that virtually professed their undying love for Auckland based Ulcerate (not actually professed anything really, rather enjoyed their work). The review itself was a mash of colourful word play mixed with a few references suggesting the author did listen to the album, & perhaps highlighting the struggle unfamiliar bands have in getting word out, especially in foreign markets like the States.
However, despite of one critics view on their new album, the band are still touring and still gaining fans from those lucky enough to witness them live, and I doubt a 1/5 would be rockin it all over another country.

Legacy of Disorder's new album "Last Man Standing" is out on September 18th, hopefully everywhere.

Transcript of Steel Panther interview. Warning: contains naughty words

Transcript of interview with Satchel, Steel Panther.

Dale: How’s it going?
Satchel: Oh man, it’s going awesome- I’m kicking so much ass right now.

D:[laughs] Sweet, so you’re kicking ass, how’s the band doing?
S: Well the band’s not doing so good, uh, Michael, he’s about 35 pounds over weight right now so we’re gonna try to get him down to fighting weight before we come down to New Zealand
D: Fair enough
S: [continues] and uh, but he’s eating a lot. He eats pizza every day so it’s not easy to do.

D: Sweet, I understand it looks like you have a residency at the house of blues in both LA and vegas for the next, well till you come to NZ basically, what’s up with that? You party in Vegas and head home to LA, is that what’s going on?
S: We’ve been doing that for quite some time, you know, years and years of, you know, basically residencies at House of Blues in LA and Vegas and been attracting audiences from, you know, dozens of miles away for, to see those shows and uh, we’ve pretty much established ourselves as one of the top fifty heavy metal bands in the Vegas-LA area and I think by doing that we’ve secured our place in rock n roll history and also pretty much secured a lot of really hot pussy for ourselves, you know, over the years.
D: sweet
S: can I say pussy?
D: you can whatever the hell, cunt, pussy, fuck, shit you want
S: oh fuck yeah dude, that’s fucking bitchin

D: I noticed when American stars go to, lets say Britain, they do get shocked that you say swear words on tv, even things like farting and pooping and shit like that- is that what you guys play on? You sort of just, essentially got your balls out for the American public and they’re all shocked?
S: Are they shocked? The American public?
D: Yeah
S: You know, I don’t know… we.. I think people are.. I think we’re a breath of fresh air in America, you know ‘cos we’re just totally brutally honest about everything which, where most people in America are full of shit, I don’t know if you noticed that, like we, I wouldn’t lie about anything. I can tell you right now that my penis, when it’s totally hard, is nine inches long and I don’t bullshit about that kind of thing, you know what I’m saying. So people, you know, when you’re honest with them, I think people like that and I tell girls when I about to have sex with them that I have Genital warts and I haven’t done anything about it, but it’s ribbed for their pleasure and I think girls like that kind of thing, you know, they know they’re going to catch diseases with me and, you know, they’re okay with that. I think girls would rather you be honest with them than be full of shit and as long as you’re, as long as they think you’re being honest you can pretty much lie as much as you want. You hear what I’m saying? [laughs]

D: so good advice to follow [laughs] I’m gonna jump straight in and ask some basic questions about your NZ show, are you guys looking forward to coming down here?
S: Oh my god, we’ve never been to NZ it’s gonna be fucking awesome. I can’t wait. I’ve heard a lot about New Zealand and how beautiful it is. I heard the girls there are really, really easy to fuck which is awesome. And, especially, we’ve got, like, at least seven to twelve hard core Steel Panther there and I think that by the time we play it’s gonna be a sold out show and uh, we’re gonna get, it’s gonna be awesome it’ll probably be the best show that we’ve ever done and may even be the last show we ever do. So don’t forget to by your ticket, come if you’re watching, listening or reading.

D: Well as a side note, the venue you’re playing at, about ten years ago fear factory who are also playing pretty close to when you are, last time they played at that venue they did that whole brake up thing back in 2001,so could happen…
S: Broke up?
D: I don’t know being in the glam metal scene if you know too much about fear factory but in 2001/2002 they sorta had a bit of a band issue
S: they broke up after NZ?
D: They played here in December, that January they were broke up.
S: Oh you know what, you guys don’t have to worry about that because we’ll never break up because there’s uh, right now we’re making more money than we’ve ever made. We all make one to two hundred dollars a week now which is more than we’ve ever made and Michael still works at Starbucks by his house three days a week when we’re not on the road so you know there’s too much money involved for us to quite this band at this point, even though we can’t stand each other, we’re just, you know, we’re all in it for the money, we’re basically musical whores and that’s what we’re gonna do- keep on rocking, uh, for the money sake. We could play New Zealand a hundred times and we’ll never break up, you know we’re like Elton John gonna keep on whoring ourselves out… for the money.

D: sweet, now for the uninitiated what can fans expect from a Steel Panther show, I ask because not only are you balls out heavy metal but you’re also fucking funnyas well.
S: Right on, what can they expect from a Steel Panther show?
D: yeah.
S:  Well, I tell you what, they can expect, I’m not trying to be, I know this might sound like I’m full of myself man you know and all that but they can expect the best motherfucking  heavy metal show they’ve ever fucking seen in their goddamn lives and I’m not bullshitting. And I do have a nine inch dick. That’s fucking straight up true. Let me tell you something, when people come and they see our show they’re gonna be like dude I heard satchel say it’s gonna be the best show I’ve ever seen and you know what, that guy must have a nine inch dick because that was the best fucking show I’ve ever seen in my life, and if he’s not bullshitting about the show then I wanna suck his dick, I mean girls will say that, some guys will probably say it too, ‘cos some guys really like to suck nine inch dicks
D: there you go.
S: how’s that?

D: there’s almost a band named after nine inch somethings
S: [laughs] what’s that?
D: there’s almost a band named after nine inch something’s, they were nails, but still.
S: I know right? Nine inch dicks, that’s actually the original name for Trent Reznor’s band but I already had a copy right on that so I wouldn’t let him use it.

D: sweet, now NZ’s only a small place, you’ve probably got a few other people wanting to talk to you from NZ, you mentioned nine inches to me, are you talking, ten inches to someone else, eight and half to someone else so when you’re sitting out there and you hear ten inches you know, or is just flat stick with the truth, I guess with nine inches..
S: Yeah, well honestly my dick can get to ten inches if I’m really super aroused. It also depends on where I’m measuring it from, if I put the ruler at the base of my butthole that’s like an extra inch, you know what I mean, I can totally do that. Do you guys use inches down there, or do you use centimetres?

D: We use centimetres for everything except for penis length.
S: oh penis length, good then girls know what nine or ten inches is, then.
D: yeah
S: I wouldn’t have to say, what would the equivalent in centimetres, like probably a hundred centimetres, right…
D: [laughs]
S: my dick is a hundred centimetres long
D: yeah, yeah um,
S: Fire hose

D: fire hose.. um now a basic question. I’m kinda regretting asking stupid questions [i.e. given the humorous responses]
S: there are no stupid questions only stupid answers alright.

D: there you go, do you guys like playing in front of the big festival crowds where there’s more people to be the centre of attention in front of, or the smaller club shows where you can mess with the crowd and I guess get groupies.
S: You know what I like ‘em both, it’s hard to, I don’t really, I personally don’t care whether we play, I mean I like playing in front of a lot of people, I also like playing in front of small audiences. As long as the people are enjoying themselves, because that’s the main thing. You know, when you’re in front of a big audience you still have a tendency to focus on the first ten or twelve rows of people anyway, ‘cos you can see their faces, those first ten or twelve rows is where you’re gonna pick the girls you’re gonna fuck after the show, you’re like lining them up, basically like of that girls got nice tits, that girls missing her front teeth I don’t wanna fuck her. You know you’re gonna look at those girls, you can’t, the further back you go they all start to look hot from a distance, in the dark, so, you try to pick the ones that are pretty close anyway so, there’s your answer for that.

D: there you go. There’s a few youtube videos floating around of some of your club shows, the last one I saw had Vinnie Paul and as you call him Chaz Kruger up on stage, and if that weren’t enough you were making fun of them the whole time, certain before they got close enough to hit you. Is that something you guys like to do if you see someone?
S: You know what? There’s so many things on youtube, but I know that night you’re talking about, ‘cos that only happened one time and both those dudes were totally hammered, you know, it’s a funny thing ‘cos Chad, I like to call him Chaz ‘cos I’ve known him for quite a long time and people don’t realise how heavy metal he is, he takes a lot of shit ‘cos he’s you know Nickelback guy, but deep down he’s pretty metal and right after that show he went out, he went drinking, two days he was drinking in strip bars up all night, and Vinnie ran into him the second night that he was out. This was in Vegas, and Vinnie went out the next night and he saw Chaz, Chad you know, and um, Vinnie like you know, apparently Chad had been out like the whole night from the night before, he still hadn’t gone home yet. He pissed himself and shit it was awesome, totally heavy metal.
D: sweet.
S: He was so drunk he peed himself in a strip joint.
D: That happens all the time here in NZ
S: [laughs]

D: there’s another one, a facebook comment. As soon as your show was announced in NZ there was all these online things and someone made the point of noticing and I gotta ask this as well, what your comment on it is. They said it takes an enormous set of balls to play the song “Asian hooker” in Japan. Is that you guys pushing the envelope in terms of common decency, manners and taste, or did your tour rider get mixed up?
S: you know what , a lot of people have probably thought when they’ve seen the festivals we’ve done in Japan. I don’t know if it went over well or not, ‘cos we never got invited back, and maybe that’s saying something but that was the first song we ever played in Japan in front of about twenty thousand people at the Loud Park Festival and we opened up with “Asian Hooker” and you know, what else can you say, I though they loved it, the crowd went nuts, I saw a lot of Japanese boobs.

D: With your first one, Feel the Steel, it was an almost classic mix of comedy and glam but with the second one [balls out] it’s gotten very misogynistic, certainly in some songs, do you have much problems with protesting womens/religious or conservative type groups at your shows?
S: No, you know, we’ve never had anybody, we’ve never had any picket lines or protesters and uh, most of the women, I’ve never seen a women at our show look offended, that came to see us. Although we did do a show just about four days ago in a place called Hershey [spelling?] Pennsylvania, we did a festival with a bunch of other bands, I don’t even know how we got on the festival because we did, I was Steel Panther, New Kids on the Block, there was Kelly Clarkson played this festival, the Backstreet boys were at this festival, and it was Steel Panther. There were some women in the front row that I was thrusting my nine incher at, and they looked incredibly offended. But, a lot of the time those girls who look super offended because they think you’re sexist or misogynistic [tele-operator jumps in with 2minute warning] they’re the first to suck your dick backstage.
D: [laughs]
S: [laughs, obviously didn’t hear the tele-operator] they like it, I don’t know why that is.
D: I made a comment here, if you don’t have any- would you like some, because I’m sure an email to the local college women’s group with your song lyrics would have them turning up in droves.
S: yeah, you saying you’re gonna invite them down to the show?
D: yeah, have them protesting outside the show, it’ll be good, make the news.
S: make a flyer or something.
D: yeah,
S: Maybe we’ll send ‘em a picture of me naked. I’m sure those girls if they came to the show, they’d probably quit that club. [chuckles]

D: We gotta wrap up so- Are you guys, Steel Panther, looking forward to coming to NZ and destroying our precious innocence, as it were?
S: Oh can’t wait. New Zealand’s gonna be the best show we’ve done all year, I guarantee it, and I’m having new Spandex made for it.

Parkway Drive NZ show, Dec 2012

Tickets are on sale now for this show, which features I Killed the Prom Queen, Depths and Too Late.
The venue is licensed and all ages, but from past experience getting a drink, or certainly a regular supply of drinks, can be a mission..

Parkway drive is a funny one when regarding fans, I guess, people either love them or can't be bothered. But no matter your opinion of the band, they are now and have been for a few years now, an international band with a seemingly constant international tour schedule and they pop over to gig in NZ on a regular, almost yearly basis. All good I say.

8 ft North Island tour

The early 2000's are back again! I am reasonably sure I saw most of the incarnations of this band through out the years; I remember catching them at an instore at Real Groovy, I saw them on that random late night music show when jackhammer collapsed... or atleast I'm pretty sure I did- look I somehow lived through years of debauchery & I can't always pin point everything with too much accuracy... I do know I last saw them at Shadows bar (on Auckland Uni campus)

I am lead to believe that Auckland band Downfall of Humanity are on the bill for the Nov 3rd show.

Just One Fix added to Fear Factory show

I've no doubt fans were pretty stoked when back in form Fear Factory (disagree with back-in-form? you obviously haven't checked out their 2 most recent releases: "The Industrialist" and "Mechanize"), when they announced a NZ show, at the powerstation on the 22nd of this month (September).

Not long after the announcement, legendary and recently reformed NZ plant-metal band 8 Foot Sativa were set as support.
Fittingly, thrashers, Just One Fix have today been announced as another local support. I say fittingly as Fear-factory-forerunners, Ministry have a song with the same name as well as a Sepultura cover. But, to be fair, I don't know where the bands name came from, and if I did- I've forgotten.

Further more, J.O.F will be in Palmerston north & Wellington this weekend (7th & 8th Sept) then at Zeal West on the 14th and Kings Arms on the 15th with Christchurch's Tainted and then again at the Kings Arms on the 5th of October supporting Aussie powermetallers Lord.https://www.facebook.com/justonefixnz

New Dethklok Album

If you spent July (or there abouts) chewing up internet data checking out youtube for the latest metalocalypse season (season four that is..), well you and other dethklok fans, I guess, might be pleased to hear that the third Dethklok album is due to be released (In the States) on 16th October, with the dvd of Season 4, released 2 weeks later on the 30th of October.

Now, here on hardfastheavy.com I don't normally post about a new album either at all or certainly not so far from it's release date and while I could give some excuse about how I had an interview with Metalocalypse co-Creator Brendan Small way back at the end of 2010. Or, how I have all currently available seasons on DVD and thus will get season 4, just for completion and to try and make my meagre dvd collection look slightly more impressive despite consisting of a few metal dvds the box Set of Black Books and all 3 Family Guy Star wars episodes... No, the name of the first track is the sole reason why I post this mostly pointless thing, I mean pointless apart from the Dethklok stuff.

The full track listing for "Dethalbum III":
  1. I Ejaculate Fire
  2. Crush the Industry
  3. Andromeda
  4. The Galaxy
  5. Starved
  6. Killstardo Abominate
  7. Ghostqueen
  8. Impeach God
  9. Biological Warfare
  10. Skyhunter
  11. The Hammer
  12. Rejoin

Dino Cazares, Fear Factory Interview

Fear Factory are due to play NZ on the 22nd of September 2012, having released their 8th studio album "The Industrialist" earlier in the year.

When I talked to Dino, on the phone, he'd already spent most of the year touring, was on the East Coast of the US mere hours away from taking the stage, at a gig also featuring Soulfly.

Until the 4th of September 2012 or there abouts, a podcast of the hard fast heavy show featuring this interview can be found here: http://www.95bfm.com/default,18,bcasts.sm?cast=202634

How’s life with you at the moment, and Fear Factory?
Everything’s going great, we’ve just been really busy, we’ve been on the road supporting the new album, and we’ve been touring pretty much almost world wide- we’re going to South America again- we’ve been there earlier this year, we did a US tour, we did a European tour. We’re currently on another US tour, then we’ll be in Japan, New Zealand, Australia then another European tour then that’s it for this year. Next year we start up again.

Doing my research I noticed, not sure if you’re on tour with, but you had a show or two with Soulfly, that’s gotta be pretty cool with Max [Cavalera] being an old buddy…
yeah, well we have a show, well we had a show this past week with Soulfly, we have a show tonight with Soulfly and then we have a show this Saturday with Soulfly, so we’re doing a few shows together. Yeah, it’s great.

I just want to say that earlier on in the year, a couple of months back you toured with, as a support, this NZ band Legacy of Disorder- was supporting you,
Yes, that was the beginning of the world tour, yes.

As a New Zealander I just want to know what you thought of them, just to make sure they were being good, honest hard working kiwi metalheads.
Ha ha, yeah, they’re a great band I mean they came all the way out here, just got in an R.V and they said Hey lets do it and I commend them for that, for coming so far out from New Zealand, and they sounded really good, had a really thrash, kind of cool Testament vibe to them. They were cool, I like them a lot.

I it helps with your brief stop in NZ to get used to the accents..
say it again?

haha, there you go. I said touring with a NZ band helps with our accents.
Oh accents, yeah. It’s quite different between Australia and New Zealand- there’s a difference there.

Aaaaye! Finally, someone from outside of the region understands!.
Yeah, yeah. There’s definitely a difference but for us, I still think they’re both kinda funny. [laughs]

Speaking of NZ, you’re doing a show here on the 22nd September. Basic question- are you looking forward to coming to NZ?
Oh hell yeah. Last time was a year or two ago, a couple of years ago with Metallica. Yeah, and I remember when we were there they just had just missed the Earthquake that happened like a week or two before. It was pretty crazy seeing a lot of the buildings that had fallen down, stuff like that, but of course we’re kind of used to it being from California [i.e. San Andreas Fault]- we get earthquakes all the time.

Is this trip to NZ gonna be a no-nonsense fly-in fly-out type trip, or do you get a bit of time to look around?
I don’t think we’re gonna have that much time. We fly in straight from Japan, the day before, play a show the next day, fly right back out to Brisbane. But I’ve spent some time out there before. This is atleast out eighth or maybe tenth time in New Zealand, maybe more. We love NZ, NZ was one of the places, along with Australia that really got into Fear Factory right away, you know way back in the early days- from our first album, ‘Soul of a New Machine’. The kiwis are very lovely.

We love having you.. After you’re done with us, you’re off to Europe with Devin Townsend, despite being a dream line-up for me, that’s gotta be a pretty sweet touring with an old pal like Devin?
Well, yeah- we’ve known Devin way before strapping young lad even existed. When I first met him, I believe was like 1991 or ‘90, ‘91 something around there- he was playing with Steve Vai, singing in the Steve Vai band and we kind of hit it off from there and we’ve been friends ever since, it’s just we finally decided to tour together and it’s going to be great. I know that ticket sales are doing really well in Europe for that tour and we’re really excited.

You’ve had a couple of Strapping Young Lad members come and go..
Yeah, we had Byron Stroud and Gene Hoglan, they were once in fear Factory at one point. But they decided to do other things. Obviously, Gene Hoglan, if anyone knows his history he’s in quite a few bands, he’s in everybody’s band pretty much. And Byron decided to stay with his Canadian brothers, Three Inches of Blood.

Who’ve you got at the moment, you’ve got Matt DeVries [ex-Chimaira] filling in on bass and I understand a Mike Heller is on drums.
Yes, we have a guy called Mike Heller on drums, he comes from a band called Malignancy you can look it up on youtube you can see a lot of his work it’s pretty intense.

How’ve the new guys been filling in for you?
Oh great, we only pick the best.

You mentioned your new album, ‘The Industrialist’, I managed to get hold of it, unfortunately it’s not available here on iTunes, I haven’t checked in stores, it’s a pretty stomping album, tell me it’s been getting good reviews..
Well, it’s definitely been getting good reviews of course but every record you put out, this goes for every artist, there’s always gonna be people who love it and people who don’t love it, that’s just how it is, you’re not gonna make everybody happy. But besides that, we’ve been having an amazing response, the album is doing well, it’s doing well all across the world. I know it’s in Australia itunes, I know NZ’s completely different but I know it’s on Australia Itunes, I’ll look into that, I’ll ask my manager why it’s not available there.

You’ve got Rhy’s Fulber helping you out, I ask because you’ve got a bit of that experimental thing going on but on the track “God Eater” I think I heard a some dubstep type samples used in there?
Yeah, ‘God Eater’ was one of those songs that we just, it was kind of like a throw back to when we first started- even before “Soul of a new Machine” me and Burton were writing a lot of songs, in our bedroom, we used to share a one bedroom apartment on Hollywood boulevard and we would write songs on a little eight track recorder. That song [God Eater] kind of reminds us of when we first started.

Was the rest of the album put together in a similar way- just you and Burton working on it?
Yeah, that’s kind of the approach was for this one. Gene was busy doing other stuff, we didn’t have a drummer and we didn’t really have time to find another drummer, there was a lot of pressure to get this record done, of course record labels always want it at a certain time. So we decided to recruit one of our really good friends, his name is John Sankey, he is from Brisbane, Australia and we decided to use him- he’s a drummer in a band called ‘Devolved’ and he helped us programme a lot of the beats on the computer. So, that’s pretty much how we wrote the record.

Being from New Zealand, land mass the size of Britian but a hundredth the population and [in comparison] the States being incomprehensible to me. If you had a good show and were so inclined are the states an inexhaustible tour market?
It’s still a killer tour market for us. Other parts of the world are obviously bigger, like South America and parts of Europe and certain places like that. But America’s a great place for us to tour that’s why we spend a lot of time here. Plus there’s so many places to play, we got fifty states to choose from ad some of these cities have five different venues for you to choose from to play at.

Parting comments:

There’s no way I’m gonna miss out on your show here at the Powerstation. The first time I saw you was about ten years ago at the same place.
[laughs] yeah, there is a place to play?

It’s gonna be an awesome show, a massive turnout and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do and thanks for talking to me.
We’re going to have a great time, can’t wait to go there and play. I’ll see you guys soon..

Satchel (Steel Panther) interview

I was recently awarded the opportunity to talk (on the phone) to Steel Panther guitarist, Satchel. If you know the band- you probably have a idea of how my interview was.

I have to admit that sitting on the other end of the line, I found it incredibly funny (and rude) so I'll be  playing snippets on the hard fast & heavy show leading up to playing the full thing & afterwards I'll make sure to post up a transcript, and maybe more if you're lucky.

The band will be rocking NZ audiences in Early October, in fact, on the second which is a tuesday, 'cos the heavy metal mayhem of Steel Panther cares not for the working week..

Soundwave 2013

Soundwave, the Australian alternative-music genres festival we`ve grown to admire, or at least want to be at each year, has now had its first 2 official announcements.

So far it features;
  • Three out of the big four- I guess Slayer's back to make up for last time (I hope they pack their insect repellent- I'm not trying to be funny on this, there are some nasty Aussie spiders).
  • Enough heavy weights to keep the fanboys busy, performing out of the bands that made them big or what they're more known for, in the likes of Tomahawk (feat. Mike Patton), Stone Sour (Corey Taylor), A Perfect Circle (Maynard James Keenan), Kingdom of Sorrow (Jamie Jasta).
  •  A good mix of popular names sure to pull broad spectrum crowds and new, young & at times specific genre bands to keep those into what ever the latest thing in metal is, happy.
I think that this is an impressive lineup, but one that unlike last year, that had me gut wrenchingly disappointed that i missed out, I am at peace with the fact that I`ll miss out again in 2013.

Dino (Fear Factory) Interview

This morning I had a (phone) interview with Dino Cazares, guitarist for the legendary Fear Factory.

They're on tour at the moment, on the East Coast of the US with Soulfly, then they're off to South America (possibly also with Soulfly).
After they finish with NZ and Australia, by way of Japan, they're touring Europe with their ol' mate Devin Townsend, they've known each other way back since Devin's Steve Vai days.

Come September the 22nd they play at the Powerstation in Auckland New Zealand, site of their show almost 10years ago- where I first saw them. It was not long after that show, apart of their Digimortal 'Can't Take me Apart' tour, that internal disagreements broke the band up.
https://www.facebook.com/events/498221473536645/

Tickets on sale at Real Groovy & ticketmaster: http://www.ticketmaster.co.nz/event/240048E5864A10C8?artistid=905044&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=200

Fast forward to 2012, and with both 2010's "Mechanize" and the recent "The Industrialist" they are back in form, back and better than ever.

So, stay tuned for more precise details on where & how to hear my interview, but it will most likely be broadcasted on the 95bfm Hard Fast and Heavy Show on Monday the 27th of August 2012, with a podcast to follow.

Steel Panthers NZ show!

Notorious mock-80's-rock-cock group Steel Panther are playing a show in sweet, innocent lil Auckland October 2nd at the Powerstation. Tickets on sale 9th August (presales from the 7th) thru real groovy & ticketmaster. http://www.ticketmaster.co.nz

I must admit that I didn't get first call at this news, as my attentions aren't really focused on the powerstation but on more metal focused things, but that might have to change as the venue's hosting Fear Factory (again) in sept as well. How blind I have been.
